Concerning your point that gun owners are law abiding and thus if the government asks them to turn in their guns, they will simply do so. Do you remember Prohibition? The government mandated that there would be no more alcoholic beverages, the country was going dry. The concept was that demon rum kept men from going to work and supporting their families and if they were forced to be sober, crime and poverty would go away as the people would wake up sober to a new day. In practice, the law made criminals out of thousands and thousands of otherwise law abiding citizens who didn’t think it was the government’s place to ban alcohol. It gave rise to a new class of criminals, rumrunners, and vastly increased the wealth and reach of organized crime. I predict a similar result if we banned guns. It would also require a change to the second amendment of the constitution.

How has it been working to ban all cocaine, and most marijuana? Bans don’t work. Guns and bullets will work decades after they are made. They don’t spoil or go out of date. Unless you can show me where anyone has successfully kept drugs out of a country, I can’t think of a mechanism short of tyranny that will keep ammunition and guns out. Therefore, let’s level the playing field by arming the good guys. Are you opposed to women and other vulnerable targets having a means to defend themselves? 911 on a cell phone just doesnt’ do much good during a kidnapping or mugging.

Dan, Getting weapons out of the hands of the majority of the citizens is very doable as most of the citizens are law abiding individuals. If they were told to turn in their weapon to local law enforcement they would do that. There are of course citizens who are not a part of the law abiding group who would resist in turning in their weapons.

For this group you would have to invest more in local law enforcement and education programs to get those guns off of the streets. This of course would not be as immediate as the law abiding group.

We should also deny all weapon and ammunition imports into the United States and prevent all sales inside the country of ammunition and equipment to manufacture ammunition. This would soon make the remaining weapons in hands of non-law abiding citizens obsolete. There would of course be people trying to make their own casings and ammo, but that would be a very small percentage.

Inside secured areas such as airport concourses, I am happy to not carry a gun because I am confident that nobody else has one. Most everywhere else, criminals are armed. We haven’t been able to keep illegal drugs out of the country, illegal ivory, or even contraband parishable bushmeats such as zebra and monkey from Africa. What makes you think we will successfully wring out of the United States the 120 million firearms currently in the posession of the citizenry?

Great comment Tom. I appreciate your well thought out comment, but I still feel that you are dead wrong.

Look at the senselyess deaths that happen every year. As I said in the post, this is not about what happened at Fort Hood, it is about what happens in our communities every day. If we made it a law that the public could not own guns, and then put constraints on the selling of ammunition, equipment to make your own ammunition, as well as guns shows and the like, the deaths in our communities would decrease.

This should be a priority.

Ban ALL Bans!! Just my heart-felt opinion, but you’re all nuts. Not one point you wrote made any logical sense. But I would agree that crazy or terrorist types should not have a gun, which is an impossible standard (but wait… the shooter was US Military) and the clearest way to remove that ability is to shoot THEM the second they start shooting – and to do that you’re going to need a gun, ammunition with great knock-down velocity, and the recurring practice and training to go at them with everything you have.

It is clear to me that these mass shootings always occur in gun-free zones. Therefore, I’ve determined these shooters are always cowards who want to spread their pain as far into the lives of others that they can. This is why I’ve also determined you are all nuts. My convictions preserve life while yours allows for the killing of life.
